2026-27 Code of Conduct matches the state phone-free school day rule

Day-to-day

What happened

The board held its hearing on the 2026-27 Code of Conduct on Aug. 4, 2026. The update ties the rules to the all-day phone ban: devices off and stored during class, lunch, recess and between classes.

Why it matters to families

Students in all grades must keep phones off and stored all school day, including lunch and recess. Under Policy 5137 grades 6-12 use locked pouches or areas. Students cannot be suspended just for having a phone, but can be for misuse like threats.

The evidence

At the hearing staff said they removed a duplicate code item and strengthened another to include "recess, lunch, and that bell-to-bell instruction time, and how students should not be on devices." Policy 5137, adopted July 31, 2025, sets storage and exceptions.
