State commissioner dismisses appeals over acting superintendent's extra pay
What happened
On Aug. 6, 2026 the State Education Commissioner dismissed appeals filed by three taxpayers, including trustee Christine Bello. They challenged extra pay for Deputy Superintendent Onyx Peterson while she was acting superintendent in summer 2025.
Why it matters to families
Leadership turmoil and legal fights can distract from classrooms and add legal costs. The commissioner found no impropriety but warned that paying people extra after the fact looks improper. The board president said the board will publish appeals as they come in.
The evidence
The board president read the decision aloud on Aug. 20, 2026. The Nov. 25, 2025 meeting described the pay as $200 a day for about 65 days, from July 1 to Sept. 3, 2025, approved Oct. 14, 2025.
