South Middle School is in state receivership; math scores fell

High-risk

What happened

New York placed South Middle School in receivership in 2026. The superintendent is the receiver and can make fast changes. Math proficiency is 16%, down 2 points. Reading and writing (ELA) rose 6 points to about 29%.

Why it matters to families

Receivership is the state's strongest step for a struggling school. The school must hit public benchmarks to exit. Grade 8 math fell from 23% to 12% proficient. The school says it had many math teacher vacancies last year and has none now.

The evidence

At the Oct. 15, 2026 public hearing the school presented its continuation plan: grade 6 ELA 35% (up from 19%), grade 7 math 16% (down from 21%), and four strategies: structured student discussion, harder tasks, quick checks for understanding, and family partnership.
