Board ends county safe room grant deal
What happened
In 2025-26, the board agreed to provide matching funds for a FEMA/TDEM community safe room grant awarded to Newton County. The October 2025 vote was 3-2, and an agreement with the county followed in May 2026. On September 21, 2026, the board voted to end that agreement.
Why it matters to families
The safe room was meant as a storm shelter for the community, and the district is no longer a partner.
