Board adopts policy on immigrant students' rights, 6-1

Day-to-day

What happened

On September 10, 2026 the Board adopted Policy 7134, Safeguarding the Rights of Immigrant Students, with six yes votes and one no. School staff may not ask about a student's immigration status, may not let immigration agents into non-public areas of a school or take a student without a judge-signed warrant, and may not share student information with immigration authorities except where the law requires it. Two staff members are named as liaisons to review agent requests.

Why it matters to families

It sets clear rules for what staff must do if immigration agents come to a school or a parent is detained, which affects immigrant families' sense of safety.

The evidence

The September 10, 2026 special meeting minutes contain the full policy text, the motion to waive tabling, and the 6-1 roll call.
