Committee adopts a new student cell phone and device policy

North Providence Public Schools · Jun 15, 2026

Day-to-day

What happened

The School Committee voted 7-0 to adopt a new Student Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy. At the same meeting it approved an updated Bring Your Own Device policy, which sets the rules for personal laptops and tablets brought into school, and a new protocol to go with it. The detailed cell phone protocol, the document that spells out how the rule is enforced day to day, was still being brought back for a vote in August 2026.

Why it matters to families

A phone rule changes what every student may carry and use during the school day, and it is the rule families are most likely to hear about from their children.

The evidence

The June 15, 2026 approved minutes record a motion to approve the Student Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy, seconded and passed 7-0, and a separate 7-0 vote on the Bring Your Own Device policy and protocol. The June 15 agenda labels the cell phone policy '(new)'. The August 26, 2026 agenda lists 'Student Cell Phone/Electronic Device Protocol' for a vote. The policy text itself was not filed with the minutes, so the specific restrictions are not established by the collected record.
