Vape detectors added while locked bathrooms and hall passes draw complaints

Day-to-day

What happened

The School Committee approved additional vape detectors at the high school and debated the electronic hall pass system that goes with locked bathrooms. Members said pupils lose instructional time repeatedly refreshing screens because the system has no queue, that getting a pass is particularly hard for students with ADHD or medical conditions, and that locked bathrooms produce mismatched pass locations and crowding at the nurse's office. The superintendent said the system had brought calm to bathrooms previously plagued by disruption. A restroom had earlier been closed because of plumbing damage from vapes flushed down toilets.

Why it matters to families

Whether a child can get to a toilet, and how long it takes, is a basic part of the school day, and the committee heard it is harder for some pupils than others.

The evidence

The March 17, 2026 approved minutes record the approval of NSHS vape detector additions, and the discussion of bathroom access under the e-hall pass system, including instructional loss from repeated screen refreshing, the impact on students with ADHD or medical conditions, locked bathrooms causing location discrepancies and overcrowding at the nurse's office, and the superintendent's response that the system had brought calm. The same minutes note a restroom closed due to plumbing issues caused by students flushing vapes.
