AI accounts for high school students, and AI rules into every handbook

What happened

From September 2026 Old Bridge High School students have accounts on MagicSchool, an AI platform for schools, and the district plans to add AI language to the elementary, middle and high school student handbooks. Students reach the tools through Clever with a join code their teacher provides, after teacher and student training. Student activity rooms stay visible to district administrators, the platform's built-in alerts and filtering are used to flag problems, and AI characters that act like people are restricted to staff accounts. The district says it will next pick selected elementary and middle school programmes to use MagicSchool.

Why it matters to families

This puts an AI tool in students' hands as part of ordinary schoolwork and changes what counts as acceptable help on an assignment, which is why the district is rewriting handbook language at the same time. It also means student prompts and work are visible to administrators, so families should know monitoring is part of the design.

The MagicSchool presentation collected for the September 22, 2026 student services committee meeting states that 'Beginning in September 2026, OBHS students will have access to student accounts', that 'AI language will be included in all Student Handbooks: Elementary, Middle, and High School', that all users sign in through Clever with a teacher-provided join code, that student rooms remain visible to district administrators, that anthropomorphised AI characters are restricted to staff, and that the district will identify and implement MagicSchool in selected elementary and middle school programmes. Old Bridge's policy manual contains no AI-specific policy; its acceptable-use policy 2361 was last edited in September 2012.
