Audit reports unassigned fund balance above state limit
What happened
At June 30, 2026, Peekskill’s general fund held $30.51 million in unassigned balance, or 21.97% of the following year’s budget. The audit says that amount exceeds the legal 4% limit.
Why it matters to families
The balance affects how much money the district holds for future needs and how its budget is presented to families and taxpayers.
The evidence
The audit’s tax-limit schedule calculates a $5.55 million maximum. District management says it intends to maintain the balance to help sustain staffing and programs previously supported by federal ESSER grants.
