How Piute County's small rural school district is paid for, who runs it, and what it is building.
How is the district paid for?
Almost nine-tenths state-funded, with a growing online school adding state money
In the preliminary FY2027 budget, the General Fund expects about $10.57 million in revenue. About $9.27 million comes from the state, about $1.02 million from local property taxes and other local sources, and about $270,500 from federal grants. State money per student (the WPU) for grades K-12 is budgeted at $2.09 million, up from $850,000 in FY2024, mostly because the district's online school, Utah Peak Academy, enrolls students from outside the county. Small-school state funding (NESS) adds $2.64 million.
State money dominates
About $9.27 million of $10.57 million in FY2027 General Fund revenue is from the state.
Online school growth
Utah Peak Academy's FY2027 budget assumes 250 students and $1.85 million in revenue; 125 were enrolled in April 2026.
Local property tax
The board set 2026 voted, board and capital levies in June 2026; local sources bring about $1 million a year.
Raises outpacing new money
The FY2027 pay plan shows new ongoing costs of $373,371 against $298,119 in new ongoing money.
The General Fund balance is projected to grow, from $3.75 million to $4.19 million in FY2027, so the gap in new ongoing money is not yet a shortfall.
