District news
Rome Free Academy now screens students with metal detectors and bag checks
What happened
Board members said in May that schools would add metal detectors and wands for 2026-27. By Sept. 21, the district safety committee reported screening at RFA each morning, bag checks, and a new visitor check-in system, saying screening is usually done by 7:35 a.m. The board's Sept. 8 report says the district hopes to extend it to Strough Middle School and events.
Why it matters to families
RFA students go through screening on arrival, with checks usually done by 7:35 a.m. A student board member said it has helped students feel safer and get to class on time. Families should plan for the morning routine and watch whether it expands to Strough Middle School.
The evidence
The Sept. 21, 2026 minutes record a safety committee report on bag checks and screening, a student member's update on metal detectors, and the board recognizing security staff for helping students adapt. The Sept. 8 minutes say the goal is to expand to Strough and events. The May 11 minutes record the statement that schools would be safer 'with metal detectors and wands in the coming year.'
