Voters approve a $15.99 million budget, up 5.39%
What happened
RSU 56's 2026-27 budget of $15,986,741 is up $817,991 (5.39%) from this year. Administrators first proposed 6%, and the board cut it back in April. Voters at the May 26 district meeting approved every article and turned down adding $36,000 for social work services. The June 9 validation referendum passed in Dixfield, Peru and Canton, according to the Sun Journal.

School costs are split among Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru taxpayers, and the superintendent warned that inflation has eaten into what the budget buys.
