Board weighs new property tax exemptions for veterans, seniors and police families

Financial

What happened

On Sep 9, 2026 the district presented new local-option exemptions: a full school-tax exemption for 100% disabled veterans, a senior exemption of up to 65% with income limits, and one for widows and widowers of police officers killed in the line of duty. The board has not yet voted.

Why it matters to families

Each exemption helps eligible households but moves more of the tax bill to everyone else. Exemptions adopted by March 1, 2027 would apply to 2027-28 taxes.

The evidence

The presenter said each needs a public hearing and board resolution and applicants apply at the assessor's office. Board members asked for a fuller presentation and a hearing date. The slides tie the choice to a shrinking taxable base.
