What happened

On September 8 the superintendent told the board that 196 students were registered for preK-12. In May, district leaders noted the student count had dropped from 243 to 228.

Why it matters to families

State money is paid mostly per student. Fewer students can mean less money and tough staffing choices at a small school.

The evidence

September 8 minutes: 'As of last week we have 196 students registered preK-12.' The May 6 advisory committee minutes record 'student count down from 243 to 228'. The August 11 minutes say 'anticipated lower enrollment' helped the board decide not to fill the assistant principal job. The counts may use different dates and rules, so they are not exactly comparable.
