What happened

The district is introducing lessons to help students understand how AI works and use it critically, rather than adopting commercial AI tools for classroom instruction. At Scarsdale Middle School, lessons are being piloted in grades 6–7, with grade 8 also participating; elementary lessons are being woven into library and technology projects.

Why it matters to families

Students will receive instruction on AI-generated misinformation, bias, responsible use, and when not to rely on AI—skills that may shape how they approach schoolwork and technology across grade levels.

The evidence

At the October 26, 2026 board meeting, district staff described an initial middle-school AI-literacy unit for grades 6 and 7, noted that grade 8 had chosen to include the lessons, and said elementary AI-literacy pilots were being embedded in library and technology research projects. Staff said the district was not rushing to adopt commercial AI products. (Meeting transcript, 1:57–1:59.)
