Students can now be excused for subsistence hunting and fishing

Day-to-day

What happened

The board changed its absence policy (BP 5113) so students can take excused days for subsistence activities. Families must say exactly what the activity is. Approved on second reading June 2, 2026.

Why it matters to families

Families who hunt, fish or gather food can plan these trips without the days counting against students. The idea came from two student council members.

The evidence

The June 2, 2026 minutes record the 4-0 vote approving the BP 5113 'Absences and Excuses' revision for a subsistence absence allowance on second reading. The April 28 minutes explain that a form saying only 'subsistence' will not be approved.
