Study finds most school HVAC equipment is aging and electrical panels need upgrades

Facilities

What happened

Engineers checked heating, cooling and electrical gear in all 14 district buildings. Of 400 items checked so far in 12 school buildings, 59% are in fair or poor condition. 25 of 28 boilers are rated fair. Five of seven elementary schools mostly use window air-conditioning units. Electrical panels will need upgrades before new cooling can be added.

Why it matters to families

Old equipment can mean uncomfortable classrooms and costly repairs. Adding air conditioning could become a large building project that voters may be asked to fund. No cost or plan has been set yet.

The evidence

The October 2026 consultant slides report 400 items surveyed, 59% fair or poor, 25 of 28 boilers rated fair, and show Nesaquake Middle School as an example with 60% of electrical items rated poor. A draft report is expected in January 2027. State building aid needs a voter-approved project.
