District news
South Brunswick is considering arming some school security officers

What happened
The district is exploring a proposal to allow some current school security officers to carry firearms; the board has not adopted it. The committee requested cost estimates for insurance, salaries, training and body armor, and leaders said any armed officers would be retired police who meet training and recertification requirements.
Why it matters to families
If adopted, the proposal would materially change the security presence in district schools. Costs and implementation details are still under review, and the superintendent said the proposal was preventative, not a response to an increase in concerning student behavior.
The evidence
At the October 15 meeting, the policy committee report said proposed Policy 7446 would allow current district security officers to be armed, and that the committee requested information on projected insurance-premium and salary increases, training, body armor and other costs before further review (1:16:30–1:17:06). In public comment, the superintendent said the proposal was still being explored and cited no increase in maladaptive behaviors; board leadership said armed personnel would be retired police officers subject to training and recertification (1:35:08–1:36:02).
