District opposes high-voltage cables planned under roads near schools

High-risk

What happened

The district says the Propel NY project would bury 138,000- and 345,000-volt power cables in trenches under local roads, including Robbins Lane (next to Robbins Lane Elementary) and South Woods Road, which leads to South Woods Middle School and Syosset High School. The district filed papers opposing it as proposed.

Why it matters to families

Construction during the school year could slow buses and drop-off and pickup, and block emergency vehicles. The district also questions whether the electrical safety standards used are still protective for children.

The evidence

The August 2026 superintendent's report lists the district's concerns (no exact cable route, little construction timing for South Woods Road, 30-year-old safety standards). June 8, 2026 minutes say the district filed papers opposing the project. The state review is not finished and the outcome is not known.
