District news
Board weighing bigger property-tax breaks for seniors, veterans and first responders
What happened
New state laws let the district expand tax exemptions: up to 65% for lower-income seniors (now 50%, 121 households), up to 100% for disabled veterans (62 now) and up to 50% for surviving spouses of fallen first responders. The board must vote by Jan. 2, 2027 for the 2027-28 tax roll and plans a public hearing in Nov. or Dec.
Why it matters to families
Exemptions do not lower the district's total levy; they shift the cost to other taxpayers, so homeowners who are not exempt could pay slightly more.
The evidence
The September 2026 superintendent's report gives the options, current counts and the timeline; Mar. 9 and Sept. 14, 2026 minutes record the board's discussion. No decision has been made.
