Middle school enrollment falls as budget is adopted

Financial

What happened

Principals' reports show enrollment dropping. Tucumcari Middle School went from 216 students in March 2026 to 182 in September 2026. The high school was at 219 in October 2026. The board adopted the 2026-27 operating budget and salary schedule on May 12, 2026, and staff said it is getting very hard to hire teachers. The FY2025 audit, approved in February, had one New Mexico compliance finding and no findings on financial statements or federal awards.

Why it matters to families

New Mexico funds schools largely by enrollment, so fewer students can mean less money and fewer staff.
