High school students must keep phones off and away all day

Day-to-day

What happened

In June 2026 the board adopted a wireless device policy that follows a new state law. At Wheeler High School, phones must be off and out of reach from the first bell to the last bell. Elementary and middle school students already had to keep devices off in a backpack, locker or cubby.

Why it matters to families

High school students can no longer use phones at lunch or between classes.

The evidence

In the June 2026 meeting recording, staff explain that "at the high school with the new legislation being, the fact that it is bell to bell... they cannot have their cell phone on or have it accessible to them", and the board adopts the policy after waiving the second reading.
