Mental health grant ends; district plans four new school psychologists

Day-to-day

What happened

A $2.5 million state grant that paid for social workers, school psychologists and other student support ended and was not in the budget. At the June 8 meeting the special education team proposed adding four school psychologists, a third self-contained kindergarten class, and more co-teaching classes. The district also counted 211 more students with disabilities than last year.

Why it matters to families

Families who rely on counselors, psychologists and special education support could see changes in who is available in their school, and the district is trying to replace some of that help.

The evidence

The March 23 meeting says the grant ran out and positions could not be absorbed. The June 8 meeting describes the four proposed psychologist positions and the 211-student increase. These are proposals presented to the board, not final hiring decisions.
