Board to vote on locking up student phones all school day

Day-to-day

What happened

The board posted a draft "Away for the Day" resolution for public comment. It would make students at every Waverly school lock away phones, smartwatches and wireless earbuds from the first bell to dismissal, including passing time and lunch. The board plans to vote on December 7, 2026.

Why it matters to families

If passed, students could not use phones at any point in the school day. Parents would reach children through the school office in an emergency. Medical needs, such as glucose monitors, and IEP or 504 plans could get exceptions.

The evidence

Board Policy page: "all student smartphones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds, and related personal communication devices must be stored in designated secure storage containers for the entire duration of the school day, including instructional time, passing periods, and lunch breaks" ... "To be voted on by the Board of Education ... at their regular meeting held on December 7, 2026."
