March 21 Override Fails, Forcing $2.3M Budget Cuts

Financial

What happened

After Town voters rejected the FY27 override on March 21, the School Committee voted to adopt a reduced 5% year-over-year budget (down from the 8.31% override budget), a $2.3M cut that will require reductions including possible staff reductions.

Why it matters to families

This is a major budget change with direct impacts on staffing levels, program offerings (no course expansions), and services across the district, following the failed override.

The evidence

"Because the Town rejected the override on March 21, the School Committee must reduce the budget by $2.3M to achieve a budget in line with the State of the Town 5% year over year... VOTED, 4-0, to adopt the Budget Subcommittee's recommendation of a 5% year-over-year budget increase."
