District news
Three of the district's four schools get new principals
What happened
In January 2026, the principals at Sand Point, King Cove, and False Pass schools all resigned effective at the end of the school year, citing personal and family reasons. By March 4, 2026 the board had approved replacements for all three: Geoffrey Frix at Sand Point, Kevin Matthews at King Cove, and Matthew Neagley at False Pass. Akutan's principal, Karen Ravenscroft, is unaffected and continues in her role.
Why it matters to families
Three-quarters of the district's schools are getting new building leaders for the 2026-27 school year at the same time. Even with resignation letters citing ordinary personal reasons and orderly, already-hired replacements, a same-year change of principal at three of four small rural schools is a significant transition for students, staff, and families to navigate together.
The evidence
January 27, 2026 board packet includes signed resignation letters from Karen Keck (King Cove), Ryan Humphrey (Sand Point), and reports Matt Brown's (False Pass) departure, all effective end of the 2025-26 school year. The March 4, 2026 special-meeting packet includes the superintendent's rehire/hire recommendation memo naming Geoffrey Frix, Kevin Matthews, and Matthew Neagley as their replacements, approved by the board.
