What happened

Alief ISD reported that its employee medical plan was running $13.5 million over budget through August 2026, as health-care costs continued to outpace available funding. No coverage change was adopted; district staff said they would bring plan alternatives back in November and a TRS-ActiveCare analysis in December.

Why it matters to families

The district faces a substantial health-plan funding gap that could require decisions about employee coverage or district contributions, with potential consequences for staff benefits and retention. Trustees received an update only at this meeting and made no plan decision.

The evidence

The October 20 meeting transcript reports year-to-date expenses through August of about $43 million against a budget of about $29.5 million, a $13.5 million deficit; it also says plan expenses were about 146% of budget. Staff said the district would return in November with competitive RFP results and financial alternatives, then provide a TRS-ActiveCare financial analysis and proposal in December.
