How does enrollment shape Alief’s choices?

Enrollment decline and budget adjustment

Alief combines local property taxes, Texas school funding and federal revenue. State support depends in part on attendance. When enrollment falls, funding can fall before the cost of operating schools and bus routes does.

State funding supplies most General Fund revenue

The adopted 2026–27 budget lists $320.4 million in state revenue within a $476.6 million General Fund revenue plan. Local revenue is $148.5 million and federal revenue is $7.76 million.

Seven trustees make district decisions

The elected board governs Alief ISD, including Kerr High School. The Education Improvement Council reviews plans and makes recommendations; its discussion is not a board vote. The next scheduled trustee election is November 2, 2027 for Positions 1–3.

A smaller student population does not remove every fixed cost

District officials have described a hiring freeze, shared support staff and position reductions. Transportation staff told the board that buses must still serve the same geography and campus footprint.

The combined spending increase includes an escrow-funded debt retirement. It should not be read as a matching increase in classroom resources or as an unfunded cash shortfall.
