District proposes joining litigation over alleged social-media and video-game harms

What happened
The Oct. 15 agenda proposes authorizing Anaheim Union to pursue claims against social-media and video-game companies over alleged harms to students and district programs. The proposed contract gives outside counsel 30% of any recovery; the firms would advance litigation costs, and the district generally would owe no fees if there is no recovery.
Why it matters to families
If approved, the district could join coordinated litigation seeking relief for alleged effects on student mental health, attendance, behavior and school resources, without an upfront general-fund contribution for legal representation.
The evidence
Agenda items 12.3 and 12.19 recommend a resolution authorizing social-media and video-game addiction claims and approval of a contingent-fee contract. The agenda says the district retains control over any settlement; counsel advances litigation costs and receives 30% of any recovery, with no attorney fees generally due if there is no recovery. The agenda does not establish the board’s vote.
