Personal finance becomes a graduation requirement for the class of 2031

What happened
On May 7, 2026 the board approved a revised Board Policy 71105 (6146.1) on high school graduation requirements. Starting with students graduating in 2030-31, every student must complete a standalone one-semester personal finance course that cannot be combined with another course, and a student who completes it is excused from the one-semester economics requirement.
Why it matters to families
It changes what today's junior high students will have to take to graduate, and it swaps one required course for another rather than simply adding one.
The evidence
Item 11.17 of the May 7, 2026 approved minutes records the second reading and approval, and states the update reflects the 2030-31 personal finance requirement and the matching exemption from the economics requirement.
