What is a small district doing with more than $11 million in building grants?

Two schools, about 600 students, and a building overhaul paid mostly by state modernization grants

Asotin-Anatone School District No. 420 serves Asotin and Anatone in Asotin County, Washington. It runs Asotin Elementary (preschool-5) and Asotin Jr/Sr High (6-12). Washington's school funding formula pays for most daily operations, and local voters approve levies such as a capital projects levy. A five-member board, elected by director district, sets policy and hires the superintendent, Dale Bonfield. It meets on the fourth Monday of most months. In 2025-26 the district won two state Small District Modernization grants and used them for a large set of building repairs. It also bought the church property next door.

Grant-funded repairs

$5,245,000 and $5,994,803 in state grants are paying for HVAC, roofs, windows, doors and a chemistry lab. HVAC work runs through December 2027.

New property

The district bought the neighboring Methodist Church in February 2026 for choir and robotics space, with $70,000-$100,000 in renovations planned.

Land for sale

No buyer has come forward for 22 acres of district land in Anatone. A re-appraisal was on the October 2026 agenda.

New board members

Molly Eller and Rich Witters joined in December 2025, and Brit Ausman became chair.

The minutes record unanimous votes and public updates on every project. Cost overruns so far, such as $50,000 for HVAC sediment and $23,000 to speed up door delivery, are small next to the grants. The minutes do not show the district's overall budget or fund balance.
