Board declares six closed school properties surplus, opening the door to sale or lease
What happened
On June 18, 2026, the board adopted a resolution declaring six properties from last fall's school-closure plan -- Becker, Dawson, Ridgetop, Sunset Valley and Widen elementary schools, plus 14 acres at Bedichek Middle School -- surplus property, directing staff to pursue adaptive reuse, a long-term ground lease, or a sale for each site.
Why it matters to families
This is the district's first concrete step toward permanently repurposing or selling the buildings closed in November 2025. A further board vote is still required before any lease, sale, or redevelopment can be finalized, and four other closed campuses (the Martin and Bedichek building sites, plus swing-space campuses Barrington and Winn Montessori, still housing students from other schools under construction) remain land-banked rather than declared surplus.
The evidence
The June 18, 2026 consent-agenda item 'Adoption of a Resolution Declaring as Surplus Certain District-Owned Properties' names each property and its recommended disposition path, and states the designation 'does not authorize any transaction' -- a further board vote is required before any sale or lease closes.
