District hit by a cyber attack; breach investigation still open

What happened

The superintendent told the School Committee that Burrillville schools suffered a cyber event in the last week of September 2025. Recovery was still under way with the technology director's staff working around the clock alongside outside agencies. All schools were fully operational again by the October meeting, but the district was still waiting to learn exactly what information may have been taken, and said that answer would determine its next step. He said he was hopeful most sensitive information was not affected because the vast majority sits on outside networks.

Schools hold names, addresses, health details and special education records for every child. Until the investigation finishes, families do not know whether their own information was among what was taken.
