Where does Burrillville's school money come from?
Burrillville School District is paid for by an appropriation from the Town of Burrillville plus Rhode Island state education aid, with a smaller stream of tuition from out-of-district students in its career and technical education programmes. The budget follows a long public path: a draft request in December, a joint meeting with the Town Council in January, the town Budget Board in February, a public hearing in May and a Town Council vote in June. For 2026-2027 the district first calculated that holding everything it currently offers would cost $2.2 million more, cut the ask to $1.6 million, and landed on a $39,355,451 budget, a 3.42 per cent rise, that still sat about $165,000 below the town manager's recommendation. To get there it asked the town to release $150,000 of unspent set-aside money and drew $300,000 from its career and technical education tuition account.
The town holds the purse
The School Committee approves a request; the Town Council votes the money in June. Because state law requires teacher non-renewal notices before that vote, 21 teachers were noticed in April 2026 and twenty recalled in June.
Trade programmes are the district's calling card, and its cushion
Career and technical education tuition from other districts funds some staffing. Using $300,000 of it for FY2027 leaves that revolving account low.
A named warning about 2028
The superintendent told the committee in May 2026 that the teacher and transportation contracts both come up for FY2028 and that the year could be disastrous unless the state aid formula is revised.
Seven elected members, monthly meetings
The committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the high school, with budget, health and wellness and special education subcommittees feeding in.
A tight budget is not the same as a weak district. Over the same year Burrillville students took a national first place in SkillsUSA Urban Search and Rescue, the district ran a certified nursing assistant course with a state hospital, state assessment results rose in English and mathematics, and a $10,000 grant paid for new middle school physical education equipment.
Where the district stands
A 3.42 per cent increase on FY2026, and still about $165,000 below the town manager's recommendation.
Twenty were recalled by name at a special meeting on June 15, 2026, once the town budget was settled.
Burrillville files unusually complete minutes. The three dates without them are two annual meeting-date notices and the most recent August 2026 meeting.
