USD 232 proposes limits on political, religious and personal classroom displays

What happened
USD 232 is proposing a district policy that would bar employees from using classroom displays to promote political, religious, or personal messages. Displays would need to be grade-level appropriate and tied to the subject being taught, while non-disruptive personal items on a teacher's desk could remain.
Why it matters to families
The proposal would establish a districtwide standard for what may be displayed in classrooms and give principals authority to remove displays that do not meet it. The packet says the Board is being asked to consider approval in December; this is not an adopted policy.
The evidence
The Nov. 2, 2026 packet (pp. 104–106) says the district is asking the Board to consider the proposed IFA Classroom Displays policy at its regular December meeting. The draft treats classroom displays as instructional materials, says they should be grade-level appropriate and aligned with the subject taught, permits principals to remove materials outside those criteria, and bars employee displays intended to promote or convey political, religious, or personal messages. It exempts non-disruptive photos, decorations, and personal items on or near a teacher's desk. This is a proposal, not an adopted policy.
