New law requires seat belts on all buses by 2028

What happened
At a July 9, 2026 workshop, the transportation director said a new state law (SB 546) requires seat belts on all school buses by fall 2028. He gave two options: about $7.5 million for part of the fleet or about $10.9 million to replace all 68 buses.
Why it matters to families
This is a large cost that is not part of the $150 million bond.
The evidence
In the July 9, 2026 recording, staff say buses need "seat belts by fall of 2028" and give a $10.9 million full-replacement option. The April 13 minutes record a "Presentation of the SB546 Reporting on School Bus Safety Belt costs."
