A $150 million bond and a higher tax rate

Building program starting after a narrow bond win

Eagle Pass ISD serves about 13,800 students in Maverick County on the Mexico border. Voters approved a $150 million bond by 21 votes in May 2026 to replace four campuses and repair schools across the district. To repay it, the board raised the debt part of the tax rate, bringing the total to $1.03699 per $100 of value. The district's finances are rated strong: it scored 100 (Superior Achievement) on the state's Schools FIRST rating.

Bond passed narrowly

The $150 million bond passed by 21 votes on May 2, 2026.

Tax rate

74.82 cents for operations plus 28.879 cents for debt, $1.03699 total, adopted August 11, 2026.

Fund balance

Staff projected the fund balance to fall from about $53 million to $43.9 million in 2026-27.

Enrollment slipping

About 14,000 students in 2021 and 13,777 in 2025; staff discussed possibly closing a campus where population has moved.

Staff said the district ended 2025-26 with a surplus instead of the planned deficit, and state aid is expected to cover part of the bond's principal.
