Phones banned all school day in K-8 and at Green River High

Day-to-day

What happened

A new district policy (IJNDBA) makes all K-8 schools and Green River High (grades 7-12) phone-free for the whole school day. Emery High (grades 9-12) is phone-free from bell to bell during class. Phones, smartwatches and earbuds must be silenced and kept out of sight.

Why it matters to families

Students can no longer use phones at lunch, recess or between classes at most schools. The old student device policy (JICJ) was dropped in September because the new rule replaces it.

The evidence

The August 5, 2026 minutes record the superintendent presenting the IJNDBA policy under new state law, with these school-by-school rules. The posted policy draft says devices must be silenced and stored out of sight. A San Rafael Middle principal said in September the change is going well.
