District proposes turning Hutchison High School into a part-time career center, ending its athletics

Day-to-day

What happened

Staff presented a phased plan to shift Hutchison High School from a full-time comprehensive high school into a part-time career and technical education (CTE) center between 2026 and 2029. The plan calls for phasing out full-time enrollment, adding students only from partner high schools part-time, and ending Hutchison athletics after the 2026-27 school year. It was presented for discussion at a January 26, 2026 work session; the collected records do not show a board vote adopting it.

Why it matters to families

If adopted, current and future Hutchison students would lose the option of a full-time comprehensive high school and, starting in 2027-28, the school's sports and clubs, changing where and how students in that program attend school.

The evidence

The January 26, 2026 work-session presentation lays out a year-by-year timeline: 2026-27 is described as 'Last year for Hutchison Athletics,' 2027-28 drops freshmen and eliminates athletics districtwide at Hutchison in favor of career/technical student organizations, and by 2028-29 the school is described as primarily part-time with only juniors and seniors attending full-time.
