District studies later school start times; no change for 2026-27

Fairbanks North Star Borough School District · Jun 2, 2026

Day-to-day

What happened

The district surveyed families, students, and staff on a possible later school-day start time and reported results to the board on June 2, 2026 (4,917 responses). About half of respondents preferred keeping current start times; high school students were the group most in favor of a later start. The district confirmed there will be no start-time change for the 2026-27 school year, and no board decision has been made.

Why it matters to families

A later start time would change daily schedules, transportation, and before/after-school child care for most families in the district if it moves forward in a future year.

The evidence

The June 2, 2026 survey summary reports response counts and breakdowns by respondent group, and states directly that 'no decisions have been made at this time and there will be no change to the 2026-27 school year.'
