Fairbanks North Star Borough School District — Day-to-day

The oldest development in this set came in September 2025, when the board adopted "Safe Spaces, Strong Futures," formally stating that no district employee may give a non-emergency law enforcement agency—including ICE—access to student or family records without both a valid warrant and approval from the superintendent or assistant superintendent. The board readopted the same resolution in August 2026, keeping the policy in force about a year after its initial adoption.

Two months after that first vote, on November 4, 2025, the board approved contract amendments that removed gender-balancing rules from the admission lotteries at three FNSB charter schools: Chinook Montessori, Watershed, and Boreal Sun. Previously those schools reserved open seats to keep roughly even numbers of boys and girls in each classroom—for example, Boreal Sun capped either gender at no more than 60% of a class, and Watershed's rule kicked in once one gender reached 14 of 22 seats. Going forward, none of the three will use gender as a factor when filling open lottery spots.

In January 2026, staff brought forward a more sweeping proposal: a phased plan to shift Hutchison High School from a full-time comprehensive high school into a part-time career and technical education center between 2026 and 2029, phasing out full-time enrollment, adding only part-time students from partner high schools, and ending Hutchison athletics after the 2026-27 school year. It was presented for discussion at a January 26 work session, and the collected records do not show a board vote adopting it.

The most recent item concerns school start times. The district surveyed families, students, and staff on a possible later school-day start and reported results to the board on June 2, 2026, drawing 4,917 responses. About half of respondents preferred keeping current start times, and high school students were the group most in favor of a later start. The district confirmed there will be no start-time change for the 2026-27 school year, and no board decision has been made.
