Superintendent says state plans to end Regents exams as a graduation rule from 2028

Curriculum

What happened

On Oct. 7 Superintendent Defendini said New York is moving to a single graduation pathway and, starting in 2028, Regents exams will no longer be required to graduate. He said the district is ready and already has career pathways such as medical assisting and cosmetology, with construction planned.

Why it matters to families

It could change how high school students earn a diploma. The superintendent said the state has not yet said what proof of learning schools will need instead.
