FUHSD weighs mileage help for families affected by the Highway 36 slide

What happened
FUHSD is considering temporary mileage reimbursements for families whose students east of the Highway 36 slide cannot be reached by district buses. The proposal covers up to 14 miles each way for 12 families, with estimated rates of 24.7 or 45.6 cents per mile; staff recommends keeping the current no-reimbursement arrangement.
Why it matters to families
District buses currently turn around at Riverside Acres Road, leaving parents to transport students from home to that stop at their own expense. The board is being asked to choose between continuing that arrangement and offering reimbursement, including whether payments would begin October 20 or be retroactive to the first day of school; no decision is established in this agenda packet.
The evidence
The October 19 agenda lists possible action on three options for the Highway 36 slide: status quo, reimbursement beginning October 20, 2026, or reimbursement retroactive to August 12, 2026. The attached proposal says the bus turns around at Riverside Acres Road, identifies 12 affected families, and estimates reimbursement at up to 24.7 cents per mile without driver costs or 45.6 cents including driver costs. Staff recommends status quo.
