How Hastings funds and governs its schools
Locally governed, property-tax funded
An elected seven-member board sets district policy and adopts a budget for a community vote. The 2026–27 budget proposal relies primarily on property taxes, alongside state aid and other receipts. Spending and levy figures below describe the district proposal; the superintendent subsequently reported voter approval.
Local property taxes
The proposal uses $51.73 million in property taxes, about 78.4% of the proposed budget.
State and other revenue
The proposal includes $8.89 million in state aid and $2.30 million in miscellaneous receipts, plus appropriated balances and reserves.
Public decisions
The board holds public meetings and considers an annual budget before the community vote. Standing committees include audit and finance, facilities, and policy.
Enrollment and spending
The budget projects 1,628 students in 2026–27 and $65.95 million in total appropriations, including benefits, transportation and debt service.
The per-student figure is a simple budget-to-enrollment calculation, not the cost of instruction alone.
