State proposes ending Regents exams as a diploma requirement from 2027-28

Curriculum

What happened

The superintendent said the Board of Regents proposed ending Regents exam diploma requirements and moving to a single diploma starting 2027-28. Local assessments could replace Regents exams, and state testing would expand to grades 3 through 11.

Why it matters to families

This could change what high school students must pass to graduate, and may affect current 11th graders. The rules are not final.

The evidence

Transcript: the state expects rules in February 2027 with 60-day public comment and final approval in June 2027. The superintendent said details are not yet released and he will send families a letter. This is a state proposal, not a Hicksville decision.
