What happened

At the August 18, 2026 board retreat, the district's technology chief said a new AI student use scale is part of the district's generative AI guidance for 2026-27. Teachers will use it to tell students how much AI, if any, is allowed on a lesson or assignment. Magic School AI is the tool given to all students; Gemini, NotebookLM and Copilot are mainly for staff.

Why it matters to families

Students may get different AI rules in different classes, and the scale is meant to make those rules clear to students and families. The guidance also warns against putting personal information into AI tools.

The evidence

In the August 18, 2026 board retreat recording (automatic captions), the Chief Information & Technology Officer describes 'a new tool that we're implementing called a student use scale' that 'has been given to teachers and they'll be start using that going into this year.' The approved minutes confirm he gave an AI update.
