Board approves MESA K-8 charter school with conditions, 3-2

What happened
On October 15, 2026 the board voted 3-2 to conditionally approve the MESA K-8 charter application. The State Board had ordered the district to reconsider after finding the earlier denial was against the best interests of students and the community. The board changed the superintendent's condition to require 80% accepted enrollment by January 29, 2027, up from 75%, plus a budget based on that enrollment.
Why it matters to families
A new charter school opening near other schools can pull students away while the district faces declining enrollment and possible closures.
The evidence
The October 15 recording shows the motion and roll call; the agenda states the State Board's September 9, 2026 remand.
