What happened

Preliminary October counts presented November 12, 2026 show 72,489 students in all Jeffco public schools, down 1,704 (2.3%). District-run schools lost 2,049 students (3.2%). Charter schools gained 345. Kindergarten is the smallest in more than 20 years at 3,867. Staff forecast a drop of 5,830 students (8.0%) by 2031-32.

Why it matters to families

State money follows students, so fewer students means less money. It also raises the question of which schools stay open.

The evidence

The enrollment presentation attached to the November 12 agenda gives the counts and forecast; the figures are labeled preliminary and unaudited.
