Fuel spill closes Point Higgins Elementary at the start of the school year

High-risk

What happened

A fuel leak from a generator-room contractor error at Point Higgins Elementary on August 21, 2025 forced the school closed right as the school year began, with staff and families told classes might have to move to an alternate location. Follow-up air testing in September 2025 found benzene, a known carcinogen, above residential guideline levels in a few unoccupied maintenance and storage spaces near the spill; state health and environmental regulators reviewed the results and determined the school was safe to occupy.

Why it matters to families

This disrupted the start of the school year for Point Higgins students and required real environmental testing and cleanup before families could be assured the building was safe, even though the areas of concern were not spaces students or staff regularly used.

The evidence

The August 27, 2025 draft board minutes describe the spill entering the generator room and soaking into the ground on August 21, with the district exploring alternate locations if the school was not ready to reopen. A January 27, 2026 environmental-consultant letter to the Borough, shared with the board, reports benzene above residential vapor-intrusion standards in the Communications Room and Water Treatment Room adjacent to the spill source, and states state regulators determined the school was safe to occupy.
