Who runs KIBSD, and how did they get there?
Kodiak Island Borough School District is a municipal (borough) school district. Its five-member Board of Education is elected at large by borough voters, at the same October election that chooses the Borough Assembly and other borough boards -- not in a separate school-only election. The board meets far more than once a month: alongside its two regular meetings, it routinely holds work sessions, special meetings, and retreats, several of them this year dedicated to the FY27 budget and to hiring a new superintendent. Like other Alaska school districts, KIBSD's money comes from a mix of state formula aid (Alaska's Foundation Program, driven mainly by student counts) and a required local contribution from the Kodiak Island Borough, funded by borough property tax and capped by state law. Five-member board, elected borough-wide
Kerry Irons (President), Jim Pryor (Vice President), Jesse Mickelson (Clerk), Mike Litzow (Treasurer), and Duncan Fields (Member) hold staggered terms. A non-voting U.S. Coast Guard advisory representative and a non-voting student advisory representative also sit with the board.
Elected the same day as the Borough Assembly
The Kodiak Island Borough's regular municipal election is the first Tuesday in October each year, electing the Borough Assembly, School Board, and Service Area Boards together. The Borough Clerk's official notice for October 6, 2026 lists one School Board seat, a one-year term.
New superintendent as of July 1, 2026
The board ran a search beginning in November 2025, drew 21 applicants, and unanimously selected Dr. Daniel Brigman on January 23, 2026, succeeding outgoing superintendent Cyndy Mika.
A packed 2025-26 meeting calendar
Beyond its regular meetings, the board held extra work sessions, special meetings, and two dedicated budget retreats (January 17 and 31, 2026) plus two special meetings focused solely on the FY27 budget (February 2 and 9, 2026).
A busy meeting calendar is not evidence of dysfunction. Alaska districts commonly use work sessions and special meetings for routine business, and most of KIBSD's extra 2025-26 sessions trace to two specific, time-bound drivers -- the superintendent search and an unusually involved FY27 budget process -- not an ongoing pattern.
